What is it
So I recently decided that I would like to start writing comics. Instead of pretending like I would be totally happy writing autobiographical, deeply personal stuff, the reality is that every story I come up with in some way involves super heroes or magic or the future. For instance, here is a fairly crappy piece of dialogue I wrote for one story (note the non-attempt at page layout):
Looks nervous once, then says “Hi.” She responds, “Hi.” He says, “I don’t think we’ve met before. I’m Will.” She responds, “Nope, probably not. I just started in finance. I’m Natalie.” Him: “Oh cool.” He falters, looks down at food. Pops back up with: “So what department are…” his face begins to drop “you…” eyes look left, slightly wide from fear at his own stupidity “…in.” She is smiling, looks confused. Says, “Well… I guess I’m still in finance. Unless this is the company’s really twisted way of letting me go.” A voice interrupts from aside, “Hey, Nat! We need another box of nametags from the car!” Nat calls back, “Be right there!” Puts down her plate of food, says “…And back to work. I’ll see you around the office, I’m sure.” He is responding during this, “Yeah! That’s— I’ll see you” We see a close-up of his hand being extended for a handshake, but a mid-shot shows that she’s already gone. “then..”
Sounds like a fairly typical, if poorly written, awkward romance, until a few sentences later when a giant tentacle beast erupts from a nearby lake and Will defeats it with a sword. I know I ruined the ending there, but it’s not a particularly clever story so I don’t feel so bad.
But that’s really what it comes down to. I never did a great deal of creative writing in college (assignments in social work tend not to involve superpowers), and I have absolutely no talent for drawing.
So I’m turning to the internet.
If you have any interest in drawing out anything I post here, have at it. Get creative. If you like a story idea but hate my dialogue, go nuts with it. I’m really doing this to learn the process, not necessarily come up with my million dollar idea (it involves musicals). All I ask is that you either send it back and let me post it with your name/link/alias/whatevs in big bold letters, or your post it yourself and link back to me.
